Spain is known worldwide for its cruel traditions and celebrations with animals, particularly with bulls.

The majority of Spanish society does not identify with these terrible activities, but on the contrary is ashamed of a concept of culture and traditions based on the brutal treatment of animals.

In spite of this, local, regional and national governments not only allow, but also protect and promote the nearly 20,000 bullfighting festivals that are held every year in Spain.

Some of them, such fire bulls or ‘toros embolados’ where a bull has burning balls of flammable material attached to its horns, stand out for their outstanding cruelty.

In this kind of celebration, once the animals are out of a truck, they are strongly pulled by using a rope tied to their heads, with the intention of leading them towards a pole. During this process, due to the strong and abrupt pulling they are forced, it is common for them to experience falls and injuries, both to their legs and necks.
Once the bulls are restrained by tying their heads tightly to the pole, the ’embolado’ or fire bull process is carried out, which consists of metal fittings with balls soaked in a flammable liquid being attached to the animal horns.
The balls are then set on fire and the rope that holds the bulls to the pole is cut.

The animals run out in panic through squares and streets where areas are set aside for the event.
They desperately nod their heads in an anxious effort to get rid of the fire that is burning their faces and eyes.
In their agony, they bang their heads against stone walls, trees or fences that protect the audience. This strong impacts cause cervical dislocations and even death.

Sometimes they also die of heart attacks due to panic, anxiety, shock, stress and exhaustion.

It is common for them to be forced to jump up, down and over obstacles, so they often suffer all kinds of injuries and fractures.

Not to mention the shouting, the pyrotechnics, the music, the chase, the blows, the burns…

Extreme suffering, both physical and mental.

All animals, including bulls, have both physical and mental sentience. This is acknowledged in our Civil Code. However, animal protection laws continue to exclude these animals from their scope of application.

Is there any scientific or ethical basis for these exclusions, are they less deserving of protection or do they have a smaller capacity for suffering?

The answer is obviously NO. These are legal exceptions to animal abuse, and the only aim of these exceptions is to allow animals to be abused in these shows.

It is time for these atrocious and extremely cruel practices with animals to stop in our country.

Sign to urge local, regional and national governments of Spain to take the necessary steps to ABOLISH them.
